Of course, given he’s a notorious, psychopathic serial killer, nobody is inclined to listen to him, but there’s every chance he’s going to be proved right. This was raised in dialogue earlier, but we see it first-hand here in how he recognizes that he has been recognized and pushes to force the prisoners back into their cells he knows they outnumber the guards, and that they’ll cause a great deal of trouble if they expose the deception. Along with whatever Manuela is plotting, our attention is also drawn to Nuria, a particularly unstable prisoner who has figured out that Simon, who is disguised as a prison guard so as not to cause panic, is an imposter. There are still important details to consider there, too.

With the particulars established in the premiere, this episode does the smart thing and begins to portion the cast off into smaller groups and subplots. Manuela is pretending that she hasn’t spoken to Emma since she has been incarcerated in Baruca, but we know that isn’t true, and she inevitably has some violence in her future as well as her past. The twist, so to speak, is that the inmate we saw her conspiring with earlier isn’t actually an inmate at all, but an imaginary friend or dark alternate personality named Emma, who is violent and murderous. Speaking of which, this second episode sheds a little light on Manuela, the inmate we met briefly in the premiere who has just received a work release. I always loved Michael more in the original series, but the new season has a real shot of Lincoln becoming the fan favourite. The other Prison Break characters do show up around the edges, but this premiere is very much Lincoln’s story and it’s damn compelling. Some fans will point out that the series has already done Lincoln trying to break Michael out of prison in season three, but the key difference here is that it actually works because the story is focused on Lincoln. There’s a scene in this episode that may be some of Purcell’s finest acting work to date and it’s all done without any dialogue. It’s kind of shocking after seeing him as a borderline cartoon character on Legends Of Tomorrow to be back in such a dramatic role, but it works. To do this, Michael isn’t in the premiere as much as some fans might like, but it totally works because Dominic Purcell carries the whole episode. The magic of Prison Break was keeping you hooked and wondering, “how will they get out of this?” Well this season looks like it’ll finally be able to up the ante. One line sucks you in and makes you want to keep watching. Michael not being dead was the biggest hurdle for the show to jump over, and while later episodes could change my mind on this, one line totally makes it all work. A mystery that is deeply tied into not only the new season’s prison break, but also into why Michael is alive.

For the rest of the episode, as we meet all our old favourites, a new an engrossing mystery is introduced. The show tosses away the confused misfire that was season four and the magic of Prison Break is back. Too much government conspiracy and not enough of the characters we love getting out of impossible situations. At first, you’ll think it’s the storytelling of season four.
